Welcome Ai Weiwei!

Couldn’t be happier! 2013 already feels like an amazing year for arts, culture, design and what else makes our lives brighter and smarter! Here in São Paulo it is time to welcome Ai Weiwei’s first exhibition ever in Brazil at MIS (Museum of Image and Sound).

Ai Weiwei Interlacing presents photographs, videos and texts that were produced by Ai in between 1983 and 2011. For the first time, these works will be exhibited outside Europe and will give the brazilians a chance to get in touch with one of the most influential artists of our time and his controversial social activist works. Too bad we won’t be seeing a lot of Ai around. He is currently held under house arrest in China. #freeaiweiwei

Não podia estar mais feliz! 2013 já tem sabor de um grande ano para as artes, cultura, design e tudo o mais que alimenta a alma e faz a vida mais feliz. Aqui em São Paulo, chegou a vez de dar as boas vindas à primeira exposição de Ai Weiwei no Brasil, que acontecerá no nosso querido MIS. 

Ai Weiwei Interlacing apresentará fotos, vídeos e textos que Ai produziu entre 1983 e 2011. Pela primeira vez esses trabalhos serão exibidos fora da europa dando a chance aos brasileiros de estarem em contato com a obra de um dos artistas mais influentes de nossos tempos. Trabalhos controversos e socialmente ativos, que a gente ama. Infelizmente não vamos ter o ar da graça de Ai que está sob prisão domiciliar na China. #freeaiweiwei

Must see: Francesca Woodman @Mendes Wood

Today’s post is specially dedicated to those in São Paulo. A Friday post to those who are staying in town and wondering what to do during the weekend. My suggestion is a must see exhibition going on at one of my favorite galleries in São Paulo, Mendes Wood.

Mendes Wood is now hosting a beautiful exhibition of Francesca Woodman, rare photographs to be seen around here, it’s actually the first time that her work is showcased in Brazil.

The thirty photographs on view at the gallery were taken between 1972 and 1980 and include one of the artist’s first self-portraits, naked and wandering in the forest.

Woodman’s photographs were mostly captured at a slow shutter speed in long exposures and the longer her shutter stayed open, the blurrier and more transparent bodies appeared, until at last they disappeared.

Her work is a converging point of poetry, beauty and mystery; depicting transformation and some kind of supernatural feelings throughout smoothness and yet great force. so vast is art loves and recommends!

O post de hoje é especialmente dedicado aos paulistanos. Um post de sexta-feira para aqueles que ficam na cidade nesse feriado e procuram o que fazer durante o fim de semana. Minha sugestão é uma exposição must see que está em uma das minhas galerias favoritas em São Paulo, a Mendes Wood.

A Mendes Wood está agora com a exposição de tirar o fôlego de Francesca Woodman, fotografias raras por aqui, é na verdade a primeira vez que o trabalho de Francesca Woodman é exibido no Brasil.

As trinta fotografias em exibição na galeria foram feitas entre 1972 e 1980 e incluem um dos primeiros auto-retratos nus da artista vagando pela floresta.

As fotografias de Woodman foram em sua maioria capturadas em uma velocidade lenta em longas exposições e quanto mais seu obturador ficava aberto, mais os corpos se desfocavam e mais transparentes apareciam, até finalmente desaparecerem.

Seu trabalho é um ponto de convergência entre beleza, poesia e mistério; retratando sempre uma transformação e algum tipo de sentimento sobrenatural com suavidade e muita, muita força. so vast is art adora e recomenda!

Wilhelm Sasnal @ Whitechapel Gallery

I first got to know Wilhelm Sasnal’s work years ago when I read Art Spiegelman’s MAUS and I never knew that the comic-style narration of the Holocaust served as pretext for a series of stark black and white paintings…or even more, I had no idea of the extension of his works.

A couple of weeks ago I went to the Whitechapel Gallery and found myself emerged into his paintings just as I stepped inside the first room. Sasnal’s paintings accept no conventional boundaries: history meets the present, public mixes with private, Romanticism fuses with Realism, as Sasnal himself states: ‘There are no rules. The only rule is that ‘you must not cheat”. The exhibition depicts the past ten years of his work, bringing together works that refer to world events and the artist’s extensive travels and his Pop-inspired work from the 90s and reflections on the troubled history of his native Poland.

History and data aside, I particularly love his color composition and brush strokes marks in which the painting comes bursting out of a canvas that looks like digital illustration.

Meu primeiro contato com o trabalho de Wilhelm Sasnal foi anos  atrás quando li MAUS de Art Spiegelman, e eu nunca soube que a narração em quadrinhos  do Holocausto serviu como pretexto para uma série de pinturas  PB… ou ainda mais, eu não tinha idéia da extensão do trabalho de Sasnal.

Algumas semanas atrás, fui à Whitechapel Gallery e me deparei com as telas de Sasnal, assim que pisei na primeira galeria. As pinturas do artista não aceitam o limite convencional: a história se depara com o presente, público e privado se misturam,  romantismo se funde com realismo, como o próprio artista afirma: “Não há regras. A única regra é que “você não deve roubar”. A exposição retrata os últimos dez anos de seu trabalho, reunindo obras que se referem a eventos mundiais, suas extensas viagens, obras   de inspiração POP a partir da década de 90 e reflexões sobre a problemática história da Polônia, sua terra natal.

História e dados à parte, eu particularmente amo sua composição de cores e marcas de pincel, que faz com que a pintura exploda em uma tela que parece ilustração digital.

Must see!

So I finally made it to the ®Nova Cultura Contemporânea festival at the Cinemateca here in São Paulo and I must say it is definitely a ‘must see’!

I couldn’t hope for a better way of spending my Saturday evening.

I got there a bit late so the short movies were already screening and people were already hanging out at the Absolut bar…lovely lightening and atmosphere. I rushed in to watch David O’Reilly’s animations and laughed much more than I thought I would. Right after the screening I took myself to the bar for some drinks, perfect timing as Shima was about to start. Beautiful live “video-sound-installation-performance” (?)…as I watched was part of that hybrid presentation I thought about how to put it down into words here on the blog and it seems there isn’t a proper definition and that’s probably what makes it so special! Forget the classic cinema format, have a sit on the floor, lean back on the wall or whatever…have your drink and enjoy!

Eu finalmente consegui ir ao ®Nova Cultura Contemporânea  festival na Cinemateca aqui em São Paulo e digo, é definitivamente um ‘must see’! Melhor programa para um fim de tarde em São Paulo.

Cheguei um pouco atrasada, os curtas já estavam rolando e algumas pessoas já estavam ali no bar Absolut…deliciosa atmosfera e iluminação. Eu corri para assistir as animações de David O’Reilly e ri muito mais do que eu imaginei. Logo depois da exibição de curtas fui ao bar para um drink, timing perfeito já que Shima estava prestes a começar. Muito bom o live “audio-visual-performance-instalação” (?)… enquanto eu assistia fazia parte da apresentação híbrida, pensei sobre como descrevê-la em palavras aqui no blog e parece que não há uma definição adequada, o que provavelmente faz o ®Nova tão especial! Esqueça o formato de cinema clássico, sente-se no chão, encoste na parede ou tanto faz…aprecie o seu drink e aproveite!
