- o artista deve aprender a perdoar
- o artista deve aprender a perdoar
- o artista deve aprender a perdoar

Couldn’t be happier! 2013 already feels like an amazing year for arts, culture, design and what else makes our lives brighter and smarter! Here in São Paulo it is time to welcome Ai Weiwei’s first exhibition ever in Brazil at MIS (Museum of Image and Sound).

Ai Weiwei Interlacing presents photographs, videos and texts that were produced by Ai in between 1983 and 2011. For the first time, these works will be exhibited outside Europe and will give the brazilians a chance to get in touch with one of the most influential artists of our time and his controversial social activist works. Too bad we won’t be seeing a lot of Ai around. He is currently held under house arrest in China. #freeaiweiwei

#freeaiweiwei

Yes, 2012 was a busy year. Great projects, great artists, great art, great interviews and great people that made it all possible. I honestly thought that the blog would only be updated next year with the new layout and design thing going on, but something very special made me change my mind. I received this beautiful card from one of my favorite artists, two actually: Becky and Louise a.k.a. The Good Wives and Warriors. Such a simple, old school and cute gesture that makes me believe it is indeed all worth it. Thank you so much girls! And thank you all for following so vast is art! See you next year and lets spread Art!

The Good Wives and Warriors. Um gesto tão simples, tão old school e especial que me faz acreditar que sim, vale a pena! Obrigada meninas! E muito obrigada à todos que seguem o so vast is art! Feliz Natal!

Hi guys! As some of you may have noticed, so vast is art hasn’t been updated lately. I’m sorry about that. I’ve been re-thinking the blog’s layout and decided it is time to freshen up. I’ll be back in January with much more Art and a brand new blog design. Meanwhile you can follow the blog on instagram and twitter @sovastisart, and on facebook as well!
Alô, seguidores do so vast is art!

Cristopher Cichocki creates multi-sensory works that intersect art, science and nature. His works depict beautiful neon desert landscapes, fascinating underwater frontiers and a vast range of topographies that mix reality and imagination. Here you find Cristopher’s words about life, art and work. Immerse yourself!

Can you talk a bit about a beautiful paradox I find in your work: the desert and the underwater.

I live and work in the desert of Southern California’s Coachella Valley, an area that was submerged underwater thousands of years ago. This region is now one of hottest places on earth. Much of the desert’s cacti and tumbleweeds are the surviving seeds of the ancient ocean. The wide-open terrain of this “desert abyss” is an extension of my studio. I create ephemeral sculptures, paintings and installations that can be discovered when least expected in the middle of nowhere. Many of these site-specific works only last for days or moments, while others have a much longer life span. My video and photography documents these actions of flux and transformation.

In your work what references do you incorporate from the area where you live?

The neon-fluorescent colors in my work accent environmental transformation and hazard. I live near the Salton Sea, California’s largest inland body of water. The fish that you see in my work are found on the shore of the sea where thousands of fish wash up dead each year due to the sea’s unbalanced ecosystem. Scientists estimate 30 years until the Salton Sea becomes a dead sea blowing cancerous dust around Southern California. This would leave endless bird species and indigenous wildlife to face extinction. Unless action is taken soon to prevent this pending catastrophe much of Southern California will be uninhabitable in 30 years. The Salton Sea is an ecological nightmare taking place right before our eyes, yet we neglect the reality and repercussions it will induce down the road. However, this portrayal of nature in collision with man-made decay and abandonment transcends far beyond a regional topic. People interpret my neon fish representing: oil spills, toxic waste and radioactive contamination.

You mix quite a few medias. Is there one that you like the most?

When I create an installation all of the mediums work together as a hybrid entity. My installation environments generate a multi-sensory feast for the senses where sight, sound, touch, smell, and occasional taste intersect. Because these installations involve all aspects of my work they tend to be the most exciting to produce.

How does your creative process start?

It differs from day to day; project to project as to how I begin my process. At times I’m completely immersed in a project and the work continues in my dreams. Sometimes the starting point is simply created by exploring new environments or switching up the routine. Every experiment needs its’ variables.

What developments are you finding in your practice as time goes by?

For the past few years I’ve been incorporating black lights in my work. The technical term for the glowing effect produced from a black light is “ultra violet radiation.” The intensity of color and optical perception in my work has entered into a new realm with this lighting. Historically, black lights and neon colors have been associated with music posters, 80’s fashion, rave culture, etc.. The colors have always been related to some product or manufactured festivity. I believe my use of black lights and fluorescent/neon are exploring new territories and associations.

How do want or expect the public to react to your work?

My narrative is open to interpretation. However most of my audience ends up having parallel perceptions of what I had intended. I’m taking archetypes of nature and industry, twisting them into new levels of perception. There’s a familiar face to the mutation. I find that people connect with the work regardless of prior art history of training because the work reflects our environment from the beginning of time to present day.

If you could teach one thing to the world, what would that be?

It would be amazing to work with scientists and explore the undiscovered depths of the ocean. To date, we have discovered less than 5 percent of the ocean. The ocean covers 70 percent of the planet’s surface. I would love to incorporate newly discovered elements of the ocean into my art practice.

Quais referências do lugar onde mora você incorpora no trabalho?

Ai Weiwei, needs no big introductions, China’s most famous international artist is well and worldly known for his artwork against censorship, authority and silence. Ai has also raised great awareness to his matter since the Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, beat him up, destroyed his studio, and secretly held him hostage.

Great art, great artist, great story that is now put together in Alison Klayman’s debut film Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China and the film reveals details of a contemporary China staring one of its most compelling public figures.

The movie depicts Ai Weiwei, or Ai God as his chinese fans call him, not only as an activist-artist but also as a father, a joker, a random man that is just not sorry and won’t stop until he reaches what he thinks is possible. The film’s opening starts today all around Europe and U.S. Not to be missed!

Los Carpinteros is the duo project formed by Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés (Cuba, 1971) and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez (Cuba, 1969). Their collaborative pieces begin in watercolors that work as a platform of communication between the two artists. Their absurd drawings and watercolors that mark the initial state of the process are actually sculptures and installations to be.

Architecture and design are themes that serve the artworks as means to explore socio-political issues. Their works often use humor and play around similarities between local and universal, and the contradictions between form and function, practicality and usefulness, reality and absurdity. so vast is art likes!

I feel like a teenager waiting for the latest Twilight movie! OK. Maybe that’s a bit too far away but the truth is I’m dying to see Marina Abramovic’s documentary: The artist is Present! As a huge fan of her work I might even camp all night outside the projection rooms just to possibly see her on the big screen; like fans did all across the world…

I’m getting a bit intense here, yeap, Abramovic feelings! Jokes and emotions aside, Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present is a must see to performance art lovers. The brilliant documentary done by the hands of Matthew Akers depicts the day by day of the “grandmother of performance art” preparing herself to sit still for three months in a performance at the New York Museum of Modern Art. The whole prepping took nothing less than a year, 2010 precisely.

The piece is the longest-duration solo work of Marina’s career and is said to be by far the most physically and emotionally demanding performance she has ever attempted. Strong images and tension are obviously present in the documentary specially when Ulay (Marina’s greatest love) comes into scene and the public is taken down the memory lane… so vast is art recommends and just can’t wait to see the iconic self-punishing performer turning her own life into performance.

OK.

Today’s post is specially dedicated to those in São Paulo. A Friday post to those who are staying in town and wondering what to do during the weekend. My suggestion is a must see exhibition going on at one of my favorite galleries in São Paulo, Mendes Wood.

Mendes Wood is now hosting a beautiful exhibition of Francesca Woodman, rare photographs to be seen around here, it’s actually the first time that her work is showcased in Brazil.

The thirty photographs on view at the gallery were taken between 1972 and 1980 and include one of the artist’s first self-portraits, naked and wandering in the forest.

Woodman’s photographs were mostly captured at a slow shutter speed in long exposures and the longer her shutter stayed open, the blurrier and more transparent bodies appeared, until at last they disappeared.

Her work is a converging point of poetry, beauty and mystery; depicting transformation and some kind of supernatural feelings throughout smoothness and yet great force. so vast is art loves and recommends!

Chantal Joffe is a British artist based in London and is well-known for her large-scale paintings that often present children and women as its main subject.

She uses oil as her main medium and the support usually varies in between canvas, board and gesso. Joffe is inspired by family photos, advertising, fashion magazines, and a bit of pornography; besides some great inspiration on the work of photographer Diane Arbus.

“I really love painting women. Their bodies, their clothes – it all interests me.”

Joffe’s paintings are kind of rude in a certain way and that’s probably what I like most of it. Maybe rude isn’t the word I was looking for…lets say: simplicity. A certain simplicity or childishness. So simple that she even leaves some previous strokes and outlines or drips and blobs showing.

Chantal Joffe has been awarded by the Royal Academy of Arts and selected thirty of the most important female artists of all time. so vast is art agrees!

I’m usually intrigued and fascinated by artists that have some sort of optical illusion or fool our eyes and brain with their artworks. David Oliveira is definitely one of those.

Portuguese artist from Lisbon, David’s work beautifully confuses the spectators. What seems to be ink or charcoal on canvas or paper is in fact a wire sculpture. David uses a wiring technique of his own and prefers working on site of his exhibitions.

His interest in wire started while he was at university, he graduated from Lisbon’s College of Fine Arts in Sculpture, where he learnt that wires were meant to support ceramics sculptures. Fascinated with the material, he took it to a whole new level in which experimentation is mandatory.

Unfortunately I’ve never seen his works live but it’s said that his exhibitions feel like something from another dimension. Details like line, shadows, volume are as carefully thought as a drawing itself. So vast is art is so in love with his work. Bravo!

Text Juliana D Chohfi

                                                    • • •

So vast is art está so in love pelo seu trabalho. Bravo!

Ignacio Nieto Carvajal – a.k.a. Nacho – is the name behind the project Bosques de Mi Mente and responsible for driving his listeners down the memory lane throughout beautiful and strong notes. Hard not to be touched by his compositions. Here he speaks to so vast is art about his work.

How would you describe your work?

It is hard to describe one self’s work. I would say my artistic output is made of minimalist pieces that attempt to bring back old memories from childhood and set some emotional moods and feelings that are buried deep inside us due to our daytime routine.

What inspires you?

As my artistic name says, I find most of my inspiration deep inside the forests of my mind. Lost memories from my childhood, feelings of things that have already passed, experiences of my early life, some places were I grew up… Sometimes something from the outside gets my attention so powerfully that inspires me, but I think it is more of a reflection of what I have inside. I try to express all this with the only language I can think of: music.

Can you tell us about the mood of your work at NOVA?

The show at NOVA is really minimalistic. My set usually involves some string players, and very colorful visuals of old footage by a VJ I work with here in Madrid. At NOVA, working with Karl, the set was a lot more laid back, intimate and quiet. It is just the piano, the wonderful visuals of Karl dancing on the screen and the quiet hall. It is really powerful in a way, and allows me to use silence in a more striking and dramatic way.

As an artist do you prefer working on your own in collaboration?

I have worked in a bunch of great projects, in collaboration with wonderful artists, but with “Bosques de mi Mente”, I have always preferred to work alone, because the music is strongly linked with my own feelings and memories and I have always thought it would be hard to involve someone else in such a personal process.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being an artist?

For me, it is all about sharing your music for free with the rest of the world. My whole working process is based on the idea that art, culture and music in general are something that belong to the people, that enrich our lives, and that if we all share our little contribution with the rest, as Aristotle said: “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. Every time I receive an email saying “Hey, thanks for your music, it made me remember of something I thought it was lost”, that moment alone makes it all worth for me.

What do you love?

Simple things. Sharing time with my couple, practicing some sports, enjoying a good walk, and a good conversation, wandering off the point, and listening to good music. As I grow older, I feel the need for peace and quiet… and that also reflects in my music. That’s maybe my reaction to the stress of life, work, routine, rush… I fight it all with a moment of silence.

What’s playing on your iPod at the moment?

I used to be very aware of new artist in the experimental/ambient/postrock/whatever scene some years ago, but nowadays I’m getting back to the classics, so you can find a lot of Arvo Pärt, Satie, Rachel’s and Debussy on my iPod and when I need something modern/noisy, Radiohead, Los Planetas (a spanish indie band) or Epic45 come to the fore.

What’s next for you?

Even though Bosques de mi Mente has always been something very personal for me, nowadays I am planning to start collaboration with a string quartet in a permanent basis, so we can build music differently, in a more communal way. Also, after “Colores”, I am really interested in something more electronic, I would like to experiment and see what happens.

Text Juliana D Chohfi

Ignacio Nieto Carvajal - a.k.a.

O show no NOVA foi extremamente minimalista.

As coisas simples.

Karl Kliem is known for his minimalist musical visualizations. Besides videos, Kliem has several works in the areas of multimedia, web design, TV, soundtrack production, films and interactive installations. And has recently been in Brazil for his wonderful presentation at NOVA.

How would you describe your work?

Making visual representations of musical works.

What inspires you?

Nature, math and physics. The internet. Travelling.

Can you tell us about the mood of your work for NOVA?

At NOVA I was invited to work together with Bosques de mi Mente. As his music is mostly melancholic, piano music; I worked with subtle movements of white dots or lines projected on a black fabric. I think it fitted the mood of the music quite well.

As an artist do you prefer working on your own or in collaboration?

It depends. There are different degrees of collaboration. When doing visuals for music, usually the music has been done before and I am sitting in my office building a visual representation for it without any feedback of the artist at first. If the outcome withstands my taste I would send it to the musician. Sometimes they like it the way it is. Sometimes I would adjust it.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being an artist?

In general I would say the freedom to fiddle with things that you like to think about and want to explore. Not being dependent on someone else’s duties. And it’s a privilege being able to learn. But I think as soon as you would have to make a living with art you get into similar dependencies as in any other profession.

What do you love?

Cycling along a sunny shore with a breeze.

What’s playing on your iPod at the moment?

An audio book of author Thomas Bernhard: Ein Kind (A Child).

What’s next for you?

Updating the automated visuals for Mouse on Mars. Finding opportunities to play in concerts with Bosques de mi Mente. I’m also redesigning my Website. And thinking about the next Killerapp, besides doing a lot of administrative tasks.

Estou atualizando as projeções automatizadas para Mouse on Mars.

German artist, Clemens Behr uses the simplest materials to create complex, architectural and ephemeral forms. Imagine folding and origami. Now imagine galleries taken by these massive structures… Behr uses recycled materials and basic geometric forms to shape his imagination into installations that blur the boundaries between 2D painting and 3D objects.

What drew you to get involved in Arts in the first place?

I got involved in art throughout my early experience with graffiti. It then developed from letters to characters and then further to abstract works and three-dimensional installations, which in the beginning where holding a lot of the graffiti elements.

Can you tell us about the mood of your work for NOVA?

Well, the mood always adapts to the space I work in, as well as colors and shapes. I guess the mood also always depends on the colors I use. If it is a neon rainbow colored piece, or a grey piece with loads of sharp edges. But in general NOVA is always a kind of fun improvisation for me.

What inspires you?

Music, nice and interesting corners in cities and walks through hardware-centers.

What are your main influences?

Well, first of all I would say my friends. But further I would say Matta Clark, Schwitters as well as Dada and Cubism.

How does your creative process start?

Depends, considering an installation in the street for example, I see the spot I want to work on and then spend sometime thinking about the work, considering colors and shapes… then I just get all the stuff together and let the piece grow like a collage. If it were a work in blank environment of course I’d prefer to come up with a concept but after that I just start and let it build up as well.

How do you know your work is ready?

If I think there is nothing more to add. But I often add too much. These days I like to work on things that can be constantly changed by the visitor. I don’t like the idea of perfect finished work. In the end they all add up to the process.

What does art mean to you?

Sometimes more sometimes less.

What’s playing on your iPod at the moment?

Hauschka-Salon des Amateurs.

Text Juliana D Chohfi

Photo Giselle Galvão

• • •

Delightful, delicious, blissful and sweet are a few words that come to mind (at least my mind!) when presented to Will Cotton’s paintings. Born in 1965, in Massachusetts, Cotton’s hyperrealist work symbolizes habits of consumption, of appetite and its indulgence throughout images of candy in between landscapes made out of sugar products of all kinds.

It seems that Cotton evokes abundance, celebration and infinite riches in his works through the use of doughnuts, pastry, and tarts mixed with female figures in what he calls a ‘Candy Forest’. And yet, according to the artist, it’s not all about beauty and lust; the sugar and extrasensorial overdose in his works are actually meant to both attract and repulse our stomachs.

Either attractive or repulsive, I couldn’t help but imagine his studio space… a kid’s dream of candy… something like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory… Yum! I would definitely be up for a ride!

Imagine an art exhibition where the works are sent in digital format, printed by the curators, and yet are still considered art. Sounds crazy but that’s the idea behind the PATCHBOX project that is happening in Pigneto, artsy neighborhood of Rome, since May 17.

The project was especially conceived by the creative studio elsewhere factory for CARGO, a hybrid space that works as an art gallery, bar and club, and is an exclusive meeting point for artists, musicians, designers, DJs and art lovers. The exhibition brings together more than 50 artists invited from all around the world and proves that digital prints can be considered art despite its endless possibilities of replicas.

The works of PATCHBOX are numbered, stamped and signed by the curators and sold by the symbolic amount of 10 euros each. When buying an artwork and taking it home, the public collaborates with the constant transformation of the exhibition; the space of the artwork that was bought remains empty for 48 hours until a new work takes its place. The progressive changes are documented and communicated through the official website of the project and other social medias.

Highlights of featured in the exhibition are the illustrations and collages of the Belgian Hervé Dieudonné; collages with textures of the Chilean Jose Romussi; illustrations by Italian Crisitina Gardumi; illustrations and photography of British artist Amy Ellis; works by Polish artist Lukasz Wierzbowski and works by Italian artist Lisa Gelli. More than a dynamic and very unpretentious exhibition, the PATCHBOX still preaches the love of art for art, all the income collected on sales will be reversed in the book-catalog of the exhibition.

The exhibition is up to July 17 at Cargo - Via Del Pigneto 20, Rome. More information on www.patchboxproject.com

The past week was NOVA’s last week and we celebrated in great style. On Wednesday, May 30, the theater of SESC received the public for a night nearly classical, a night of a certain silence and introspection. Bosques de Mi Mente presented his piano solos accompanied by digital sound interference alongside Karl Kilem, responsible for the visual projections. The pair couldn’t be better. Perfect synchronization of sound and image, it even seemed that everything was done by the same hands.

Still on Wednesday evening, Eluvium, Abstract Birds and Quayola did a beautiful show. Unlike Bosques de Mi Mente, Eluvium came on stage with a bit of a base in his music. A delicate and profound base. Although the images projected by Abstract Birds and Quayola had harsh forms, they were still in harmony with the sound. Eluvium’s notes seemed to be generated from the light reflected on the metalic geometric shapes on the screen. Just beautiful!

On Thursday, May 31, the audience officially said goodbye to NOVA on a night of pure fun and great music at the choperia of SESC. Hess is More had the audience dancing, smiling and clapping with their Disco-Punk-Folk-Pop-Jazz-World-Party sound and style! To close the night and NOVA, nothing better than NOIA, the band, that set the stage on fire with their Pop-Rock-Electronic sound. What a blast!

It’s been almost a week that the NOVA Festival is over… and nearly two months of intense work, art and good music are now starting to be transformed into memory, good memories! Good memories that will leave a feeling of ‘encore’ in our minds until the other edition comes up. Thank you so much all of you who participated with us in this great festival. And we, here at NOVA, we carry on following Hess is More’ philosophy: “Creation Keeps the Devil Away”. See you next time!

E nós aqui, do NOVA, vamos seguindo sob a filosofia de Hess is More “Creation keeps the Devil away”. Até a próxima!

I was granted the chance to talk to Olaf Bender a.k.a. Byetone on a quick cigarette break just before he went on stage at NOVA. I say granted because, yes, I am an electronic music lover and a great fan of his work. Press play!

I would like to start with how you got involved with electronic music in the first place.

It was a long time ago, in East Germany during the 80s… At that time we already tried to do some kind of electronic music. Artists like Lauri Andersen and The Residents and even artists from the new wave influenced us a lot. We were trying to do electronic music without any synthesizers so we worked a lot with tape loops. I think today my main background is that I was never trained in a traditional way to do music. And only the machines and computers gave us the chance to create music without real knowledge. When I was 18 I wasn’t really interested in learning proper instruments.

Did you use DAT tapes?

Not at that time, these tapes came later. At that time we used old analog tapes. We cut it and glued it; it was really old school. We did everything without the technology of nowadays.

How would you describe your sound?

I cannot really describe it. I’m not a very intellectual person so I prefer to feel the music. I always look for intensity in my music. I like music that can shut up your brain, the music that goes through the body. I look for the physical touch in the music so I don’t know what style it is. Electronic music was in the beginning very influenced by black music and the first techno records came from producers from Chicago and Detroit… what I really like about electronic music and what is really interesting for me is how much you can take out of the music and hold on to that energy. For example, if you listen to Disco music from the 70s, the breaks are the best part of it, not the chorus. And I’m a white guy from East Germany and I had to bring my influences into the music and when I started I thought ‘Okay, we are white, we are not so sexy or whatever and we are engineers, serious engineers’ and this is what I try to combine in my music: my nature with something shamanic. Basically, I try to use the technology in a very shamanic way.

Would you say music is a universal language?

Yes. I think music is the last universal language we own. The language itself is a bit difficult. A lot of words are use for advertisement or whatever and it gets superficial while music goes into the end of your brain. And this is what I really like. (laughs) Music doesn’t have a weight, it isn’t physical; even if you collect music in the end you only have notes. This is what I think is really interesting in music because you cannot hang music, you have to listen to it and it’s exactly in this moment where you really enjoy it.

What inspires you?

Almost everything from outside the music. I was really influenced by films. I did a lot of experiments with film. São Paulo is inspiring me because there are a lot of colors and you don’t see this kind of colorful environment in Germany. Anything outside of music inspires me; even a wave in the ocean can serve as inspiration. It’s stupid in the end but it’s all about moments.

I understand you have a record label back in Berlin. Would you like to talk a bit about it?

The label runs for 16 years now. We now have everything under control. Back there when we started, everything was much easier to be done. The same machine that did the music worked for doing the visuals… You didn’t have to spend millions of Euros to build up a business. The main thing behind the label was to have control over everything we did and the other thing was that we needed so much help from companies to do our work and I think that you can’t compromise yourself too much when it comes to art. So that’s why we founded the label. And it ended up being more like a platform for artists. All the artists in our label are kind of members of the company as well. They have a lot of freedom to do what they want to do. This is the idea behind, to become free.

Do you have a favorite club?

Oh yes. There are a lot of clubs I really like but one of my favorites is Berghain. I like Berghain during the week. I think the guys there really respect music and they could take out much more profit but they always look first into the music. There’s another club I really like in Kyoto and it’s a 120 people audience only but the concept is exactly the same as I was saying. I don’t know how they finance it but they have an incredible sound system, they do great bookings and they always surprise people. They just serve what they think is good. It’s like a good radio station; you never know the next song and they surprise you; they don’t serve the songs you already know. They show music that you don’t know but you still like it.

Were you upset that Bar25 was shut down?

Yes. I mean I’m upset that the whole area is owned by O2 and everything was shut down. It was a good party place. You could go there on a Friday evening and maybe you would leave on Sunday evening, it was really nice. It was always celebrating the weekend kind of in a flower power times (laughs) but in a nice modern way. But I would still prefer Berghain because I’m not a big fan of this beautiful beach party mood. I like the darkness of the night.

Naquela época, a gente usava fitas analógicas antigas.

Sim.
